About Karen F. Rose
Dramatic cloudscapes and the energy of the meeting of sky and sea inspire me, but I am also a painter of the "quiet" intimate landscape. The mood and mystery of nocturnes, the moon shimmering on a lake or the Atlantic ocean, the dusky glow of the setting sun on marshes and open prairies, soft light on grand stately oaks, dawn breaking through towering pines in a misty morning...they whisper their desire to be painted.
I invite you to reflect and join me in that peace and meditative energy.
My hope is to create an emotional connection to a memory... an unspoken connection we will share.
Early in my art career, I painted directly from life with an emphasis on portrait and still life paintings.
But now influenced by the 19th and early 20th century landscape painters, my paintings in oil on canvas, now reflect a search for a contemplative mood and spiritual connection to the landscape.
My painting technique has changed to a more indirect method using several layers of translucent paint applied in thin glazes which create a luminous glow which I love.
I paint both in the studio and "en plein air" taking my easel out to capture color notes for larger paintings.
My hope is that viewing my paintings will draw you in giving you a sense of peace and serenity.

About my pastels
In 2008 I was fortunate to have the pleasure of visiting La Maison du Pastel in Paris, founded in 1710, the oldest manufacturer of handmade pastels in the world.
Henri Roche sold pastels to such famous artists as Degas, Redon and Whistler.
A fascinating history of the company is on their web site and explains how Isabelle Roche now carries on making these exquisite pastels one at a time.
In my small homage to the pastelists of the past, I put a few strokes into each and every one of my paintings.
So when you become a collector, you have French handmade pastels, a little art history and a lot of my poetic vision.
